“O Lord, You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. You scrutinize my path and my lying down, and are intimately acquainted with all my ways. Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know it all. You have enclosed me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me.”
Psalm 139:1-5
When we consider the omniscience of God, we are attempting to wrap our minds around the fact that He knows all things and that nothing can be hidden from Him. This is most perplexing, but in the verses above we see that this is in fact the reality. God’s knowledge of intentions, thoughts, actual events, circumstances, and their outcomes are all known before they ever occur.
Our God is a God who knows, which means that we can rest and trust in His providence working in our lives without us worrying what the outcome will ultimately be. How often do we faint at the thought of not knowing if our circumstance(s) will turn out the way we want? When we consider that God knows all things, and that at the same time He orders all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose, we are then reminded to walk in the grace that He established for us before the foundation of the world. When we fall, He knows; when we succeed, He knows; when we suffer tragedy, He knows; when we experience triumphs, He knows; when our hearts grow weary and doubt, He knows; when our strength is small and our thoughts are distant, He knows; when we can’t take another step, He knows; He knows, He knows, and He knows.
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, even there Your hand will lead me, and Your right hand will lay hold of me. If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, and the light around me will be night,” even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.
Psalm 139:7-12
Moreover, God is omnipresent, which means that He is present everywhere wholly and completely. He does not divide Himself up in order to be at all places at all times, but rather because He is omnipresent He is undividedly and effectively present. Jonah thought he could run from God, and there was God–bringing him back with His guiding hand.
So, as you consider living Coram Deo, consider that God is there with you–always–no matter what!
